Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts. Used incorrectly they can cause contact dermatitis, allergic sensitisation, phototoxic burns, mucous-membrane injury, and — if ingested, particularly by a child — serious systemic poisoning. Never ingest essential oil unless a qualified clinician has specifically directed you to, and never apply undiluted essential oil to skin, eyes or mucous membranes.

We make no claim that any oil on this site diagnoses, treats, cures or prevents any disease, and you should not rely on this site to make a health decision.

Populations requiring professional advice

The dilution figures published here describe general adult reference points. They do not account for your individual circumstances. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have epilepsy, asthma, hypertension, a cardiac condition, a bleeding disorder, or a diagnosed liver or kidney condition, if you are taking anticoagulant, antihypertensive, sedative or immunosuppressant medication, if you are preparing a blend for a child under six, for an older adult, or for an animal, or if you have previously reacted to a cosmetic or fragrance product, consult a qualified professional before using any essential oil.

Cats in particular lack the hepatic glucuronidation pathway required to clear many terpene alcohols and phenols, and cases of feline poisoning from topical and diffused oils are well documented. If an animal in your household has been exposed to essential oil, contact a veterinary surgeon immediately.

Accuracy, sourcing and corrections

Constituent percentages are indicative ranges drawn from published gas chromatography literature and vary by cultivar, harvest year, distillation batch and chemotype. A figure on this site is not a certificate of analysis for the bottle in your hand, and you should not treat it as one. Dilution arithmetic uses a single stated convention: 20 drops per millilitre. Real dropper inserts vary between roughly 15 and 25 drops per millilitre, so a blend made with a different insert will differ from the printed figure.

We aim to be accurate and we correct errors when they are reported with a source. We do not warrant that any page is free of error, complete, or current, and we accept no liability for reliance placed on it.

Limitation of liability
