Cardamom oil is roughly a third 1,8-cineole and a third terpinyl acetate, which makes it a warm spice with a cool top note — and it puts it functionally next to eucalyptus rather than next to ginger. Adult ceiling 3%, a caution row for epilepsy because of the cineole fraction, and a genuine rotation problem if you also use rosemary or eucalyptus.
Safe dilution matrix
Rows are the concentration, columns are the audience. Each cell carries two lines: drops per 10 ml of carrier oil, and whether this site advises that combination. Figures come from 1 ml = 20 drops, and the bold row is the ceiling for this oil.

What each concentration is normally for: 0.5% — Facial blends, sensitive or broken skin, children 6-15, first patch test · 1% — Everyday adult body and massage blends, daily leave-on use · 2% — Short-term localised adult use, 7 to 10 days then re-assess · 3% — Adult ceiling for robust oils, small area, short course only

Four-step skin patch test
- Dilute 1 drop in 5 ml of carrier oil (1%).

- Cover for 24 hours.
- Read at 24 and 48 hours. A cool tingling is the cineole at 32%; burning is not, and means washing it off.

Storage & oxidation
Two thirds of this oil is cineole and terpinyl acetate, both oxidation-resistant, so cardamom keeps well; the terpinyl acetate hydrolyses slowly into terpineol over years. Three years in a sealed amber bottle. The smell of an ageing bottle goes from bright eucalyptus-cardamom toward a flatter, more soapy note.
Rotation & substitution
Cardamom is cineole-forward at 32%, which puts it in the same functional slot as eucalyptus and rosemary CT cineole. Do not stack them in one blend, and rotate cardamom out every few weeks with a non-cineole warm note such as ginger or black pepper.
